I shocked to hear of his passing. I have known John for nearly 20 years. I remember him always saying don't let the little thing stress you, we're cool. I can hear him echoing that. He would walk into a place and almost everyone there knew who he was, if they didn't they would before he'd leave. He was well liked wherever he went and treated everyone as an equal. He would always try to break the ice and not have people feel even more stressed out at court then it can actually be. He had that ability to lift your spirits up and turn a bad day into a good day. My heartfelt condolences to Cathy and the rest of his family my thoughts and prayers are with you. We definitely lost a great man but God has gained him. John will have an everlasting legacy in the court system and his community. I will truly remember what he has taught me and cherish the memories we had. Thank you John for everything and I bow to you one more time. May God bless you

Over my 25 year tenure as teacher and school supervisor at Marantha Christian Academy (MCA), hundreds of parents, students and faculty have walked through our doors. Few have left the impact that Judge Farnum (as we called him) has made over the years.
We had the honor of calling on Judge Farnum to be our first ever guest speaker at MCA over 20 years ago. We sought out somebody who could inspire the students to chase their wildest dreams, a role model they could look up to, a prominent community member who successful in their field, and most importantly, had a heart for God. Judge Farnum was an easy choice as he embodied all that and so much more. I will never forget his charge to our small student body, leaving an impression I’m sure they carry with them to this day. Over the years, he made several presentations to our school and was one of our last guest speakers. He also afforded us the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit his court room while court was in session and even paid for lunch after the visit!
Judge Farnum became much more than a reliable professional partner, he was a vibrant and valued member of our parent community. We were delighted when the Farnum Family entrusted us with providing education for his youngest daughter Jonae. I would see Judge Farnum every day as he faithfully picked up and dropped off his beloved daughter. His pleasant demeanor, hearty “Good Mornings!’ and kind eyes all topped off with his black brimmed hat will be missed walking up and down our school hallways. I still smile thinking back to him engaging us as he manned the Barbados booth for our Black History Celebration. Judge Farnum was a wise man always carrying a bit of advice on the tip of his tongue.
As the decision to close the school was announced, it impacted us all. I cherish how Judge Farnum supported the school with an unwavering fervor and advocated for the importance of Christian Education.
The benefit of being a Christian school meant that we could share with our students the joy of salvation and the rich reward of spending eternity in Heaven with God. Although we are grieving the loss of our dear Judge, we rejoice in knowing that He has transitioned to a better place. I remember sharing that with Jonae, and I hope that all mourning this great loss are comforted by the thought that Judge Farnum is now safe with God in Heaven.
We, the MCA community, remember Judge Farnum with gratitude and love. We were blessed to know him, learn from him, and his memory lives on in all of us.

What can you say about a man who was larger than life - John Farnum enjoyed life. If you are fortunate enough to be called a friend, you celebrate his life with so many. When I think of John, I think of James Bond 007 (Sean Connery being the best, of course), English Premier League Soccer, Clint Eastwood, the Rat Pack, Nat King Cole, calypso music, Mount Gay or Appleton Rum - none of that other stuff, backyard bbq's, fine wine and a sharp dressed man, complete with a nice fedora. He would often say "if I win the lottery, we are going to Barbados", He would always make eye contact with you and ask "how are you doing?" and you knew he cared that you gave him an honest answer. If you asked how are you - he would say "I'm cool" with a big smile on his face. We often joked with him that if he ever decided to run for Mayor of Brampton, he would win, hands down. Frank Sinatra was singing about you with his big hit 'My Way'. Thanks for the memories. Love, your friends, Rick and Eileen

My deepest condolences to the entire family of John. I am still in somewhat of a shock knowing he is no longer here. I thank God I had the pleasure of knowing John, not in a capacity as a Judge but as a friend. I met him through a friend and we became good friends as well, that was a blessing. From the time I met John I was always smiling with all of his hilarious story telling moments, there was never a dull moment with him (he was the life of social gatherings). John was extremely wise and smart as well an offered me so much great advice on many things we had spoken on, for that I thank you John. I must admit it was so romantic and sweet to always hear him speak about 'catching Cathy', I knew she was the love of his life and being blessed with Jonae was beyond words for him... Thank you John for being a wonderful friend, always concern with how things were going with me, thank you for leaving a handprint on my heart. To Cathy I pray God will give you strength to face each day, always know you are in my prayers. Rest In Peace John.... From Andrea

My deepest condolences to Cathy and the whole family. I first met John through my Dad, Alex Amador many years ago, when they worked together at McDonnell Douglas and became fast friends. I'd look forward to his visits, so charismatic, always a smile, always the best storyteller. Years later it would be my turn, to work with John in the courts. Any day working his courtroom was sure to be a good one. He was so gracious with everyone, staff and the public, and always trying to point out a quick & helpful lesson on life to the accused. Every weekend court we worked, off he'd go on our breaks, the social butterfly, disappearing down the hallways, off to meet all the families and assure them there was always hope for the days ahead. Spreading the positivity he was so well known for. He'd often have me call my Dad to come for lunch on our court days together, we'd laugh the time away with the funniest stories of MDCAN or our courtrooms. He never let anyone walk away without a smile, it was his gift! I have no doubt 'Johnny' (as Dad called him), is already having a few drinks with him, and the laughter & shenanigans continue. John is going to be so dearly missed, he touched so many lives with his bigger than life personality. RIP my friend, you'll never be forgotten.

Had the pleasure and honour of working with John at Brampton, Orangeville and Caledon East courts over 30+ years. Such a sincere and caring man. Always got the impression that John saw everyone he dealt with as equals to himself and each other. Whether it was an accused, prosecutor, defender, witness or police officer they all entered John’s court as equals before the law. John had a big heart. Numerous times watched with a warmed heart as John recognized an individual standing before him needed a break or hand up to move on with life. John could be just as effective when dealing with a situation where he recognized for the safety of an individual or a community that someone must be detained or have greater a greater penalty imposed.
Loved having informal conversations (and belly aching laughs) with John about life and his love of the Islands and his time as a young man in the British Navy. One story recall John recounting was his time serving on a British Navy submarine during the dangerous Cuban missile crisis blockade. John recalling how interesting it was during that time watching as previously avowed atheists got down on hands and knees praying to the Almighty during that dire time.
John will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. I count myself as one of those fortunates.
RIP John Farnham

Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
I’m a Peel Regional Police officer and have known John for about 20 years. Like most I knew John as a JP. He was the nicest guy. He treated everyone the same. It didn’t matter if you were the police, a crown, defense counsel or the accused. He was a true gentleman.
I have such fond memories of John. He understood his job as Justice of the Peace was to ensure peace and justice throughout the community. I brought several search warrants to JP Farnum over the years. Some to his home after hours where we had opportunities to get better acquainted while John read the warrant. Because of John’s dedication to the community, offering to review warrants, many officers got to know the personal side of John. He was a kind man. We had a lot of great conversations over the years. He spoke about the love for his family and of course Barbados.
Im not a churchy person and believe that we were put on this earth to help others as we find our own way. While most of the population may not know John, he made a difference to this community and in the lives of thousands.
Rest In Peace John. I’m going to miss you.

My name is Don Droy. I was the Sergeant in charge of the Peel Regional Police Court Security and Prisoner Escort Bureaus, at first at the Clarence Provincial Court and then Davis Courthouse, from 1990 until my retirement in 2009.
I dealt with Justice of the Peace John Farnum, professionally as one of our JPs, initially as an Officer attending court to testify and then as the OIC of the two bureaus for 19 years.
When on the bench, John was a hard working, consummate professional in his role as JP. He was fair, always polite and courteous to those in the courtroom and had a great sense of humour, which relieved some of the tension in the case before the court and in the courtroom in general.
Well working at the Davis Court, I always arranged social gatherings for all the Peel Officers and civilian staff that work for us at the Courthouse, one in mid Spring and one in mid Fall, just as a team building get-together, to foster friendships and a chance blow off steam. It was nothing fancy, generally just at one of our favourite restaurants in Brampton, for a mess of chicken wings and beer. On a number of these occasions, John would drop in and spend the evening with us. To all of us he was a good friend and accepted just one of the gang, as he was so well respected by us all. I spent many evenings talking to him, sometimes late into the evening. John was always interested in my welfare, at work and in my civilian life. What always struck me was his sincerity in his enquiries, he really cared for myself and the Officers he spoke with. He had formed a close friendship, a bond, with we Officers who worked with him in Peel, He also discussed his love of his home in the Islands, Barbados as I recall and as I had worked for Wardair years before and travelled to Barbados and some other Caribbean islands, I totally understood his love of home.
When I retired, I moved up to our retirement home in Northern Ontario and in 2017 to another home in Nova Scotia, so unfortunately, I lost touch with John and many other I worked with.
Now this week I learned that he and his wife and daughter had all been stricken with Covid
and tragically John has succumbed to the virus.
I just wanted to express my heartfelt sorrow for the passing of a wonderful gentleman, a respected member of the law community, a truly decent human being and one who I had the pleasure of calling, my friend.
Members of John's family have my deepest condolences on your loss. I have no doubt that Justice John Farnym (retired) will have a special part to play, on the bench in Heaven!
