Janet Teh posted a condolence
Saturday, March 19, 2022
My name is Janet.
On behalf of Toronto Community Housing Corporation, Community Safety Unit, we send our deepest and sincere condolence to the Izzard's family. To us, we are an extension of his "Cuz"/family. His deep devotion and love to his kids, his wife and his family is immeasurable.
My favorite moment with Bobby as his partner at work for the past 13 years was, one morning, myself, Bobby and his "Chinese friend" Arnold responded to a sleeper call at the stairwell. A check of the sleeper's first name: "Robert", last name: "Izzard". After we send him his merry way, Bobby and I went to the lobby. Bobby turned around, slaps me across the shoulder and asked, "Why did you run my name in the system for? What's wrong with you??" I found out that the sleeper was one of Bobby's many cousins.
My other favorite moment of Bobby is, every morning, he'll be in the washroom for a few minutes. He'll come out of it, checking his teeth out, put on some after shave,.slaps it a few times on his face, cheeks, put on some hand lotion, smells himself to make sure he smells good. I tease him one day about him smelling good, to which he replied, "It's for all of my special ladies" (of course , referring to his wife, daughters and all of the special ladies in his life).
He is very humble and proud of each and every one of all of his children and their accomplishments, and including his lovely wife's children, as he was able to be a part of their life, and was able to make a difference.
Any one who has crossed path with Bobby is very lucky, as he will give you his undivided love and attention no matter who you are. I am very fortunate to have known him, and working along side him is a very humbling experience. It is even more humbling is to know his amazing family. I just want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart, for allowing myself and all for my colleagues to know him and to love him the way that you and him have shown all of us, the true East coast Nova Scotian way..
Cheers and GOD bless to each and every one of you. May he and his angels watch all over you from above with a great smile, and with pride. A true hero at heart, with endless love

Let me start out by passing my sincerest condolences to Robert's shining star, Karen, and to all of his wonderful children. You have lost a man of integrity and conviction who will no doubt continue to be a directional beacon guiding your future. You are so lucky to have him in your heart and mind as you continue your journey through life.
Bobby Love and I were born in the same year. It is my distinct pleasure to have been hanging with him since we were teenagers. I was able to experience his growth through life's stages as exemplified by the myriad of monikers associated with him. What a pleasure for anyone able to follow with him through those stages. I fondly remember his basketball playing heyday when he was known simply as Izzard. When you said that name everyone in the community knew who you were talking about. It was a name that carried a great deal of credence as it eventually morphed into Robert Izzard, the Godfather of basketball here in Toronto.
Basketball was a passion with Rob. A passion that was intricately sewn into every fabric of his being. He took that feeling and mentored the young guys coming up in his footsteps. Then developed it to another level with the Mr. Submarine team, first as a player and then later as a manager/coach. The Subs had a reputation far and wide as the team to beat if you wanted claim the mantle as the top competitive male team in the Canadian circuit. More than once I travelled with him down home to play in Nova Scotia's Provincial Black Basketball Association tournament. He had so much pride leading those teams to victory. Bringing such talented teams to the community of his birth meant so much to him. It was his way of showing young people that they could dream and aspire to be the best in their chosen field. Later in life, he found his soulmate in Karen who was as avid a follower of the game as he was. I knew that when I went to a high profile game in the GTA I would be sure to find the both of them intently watching the latest crop of lit talent.
Going with Doodles down home opened my eyes to a deep family and community connection that he always carried inside of him. Living in Africville until the age of seven, when everybody was forcibly evicted to make way for a bridge ramp (Uhh, Wazzup wid dat?), he held the Africville Diaspora close to his heart as they in return did for him. I remember going to a club on Goettingin Street in Halifax passing by the lineup at the door. Talking to the much younger than us doorman Bobby said, "Its Doodles". The Red Sea parted and we were whisked inside. I had a first hand opportunity to stay in North Preston and personally meet many of his siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and more including his beloved mother Irene. The love shown all around left an indelible impression with me. So many people will miss Doodles.
A strong man of principle and leadership Bob Izzard will be missed by all who linked with him through his long life. He left one heck of a legacy on how to lead a successful life playing within societies rules. And doing this with a plethora of systemic obstacles and hinderances thrown in his pathway. I am so very grateful and humbled to have had him as a friend for over 50 years (Yikes). I will keep his memory alive within me until it is my turn to turn over the sod. RIEP Bro. Richard Dean
