Tribute from Maurice Charvis
For those of us who knew him before he migrated to Canada, Alexander Charvis was Zanny. The matriarchs in the tightly knit extended family once suggested the title ‘Uncle’ be used by the younger generation as a designation of seniority rather than an indication of relationship. But that didn’t fly, perhaps because his immense popularity and easy-going nature made it hard to attach anything to the name Zanny. For us he was a trailblazer and we basked in the name recognition that came from his exploits on the cricket field as there was the inevitable question on being introduced as a Charvis –‘Are you related to …….?’.
Other tributes have noted that he Is considered to be the ‘best player not to have played cricket for Jamaica’ but there is a little more to that story. Once he was visiting Jamaica and was staying by my house and the legendary Renford Pinnock came by. Now ‘Pinnie’ is considered the ‘ best player not to have played cricket for the West Indies’ and so the conversation quickly turned to memories of the game. Pinnie brought up the topic of Zanny not playing for Jamaica, more, I think, to make a point to a younger generation. It turned out that Zanny was actually called up but his then employer refused to give him time off so he had to decline the selection. I reflected then on how the times and circumstances can dictate our paths in life and that not even once in the years I had known him had Zanny grumbled or complained about the hand that he was dealt.
Zanny fell a little short of the century in the innings of life but he lived it to its full. My condolences to his wife, Marva, children and grandchildren. May his soul rest in peace.

As a child growing up, Alex was always there for my mom (Marva), and myself. He was always driving me back and forth, from Brampton to Toronto. He always treated me as his own child.
In the last two years during covid, Alex spend his time at the nursing home. I was always looking forward to go visit him. His room was on the main floor, so I would call him on his phone before I get to his window. As soon as I get to his window he would have the biggest smile that lights up the whole place. He would come close to the window and we just talked...mostly about the Blue jays. Sometimes he would mention he's at the station waiting on his train. But he was always saying that for years. So Alex...you got that train you were waiting for! Now you can rest in peace. You will always be missed.
But I still feel his giant smile and laughter shining down. Love always.
