Obituary of Edwina Dolores Smith

It is with great sadness that the Smith family announce the passing of Edwina Dolores Smith on April 15, 2026 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was cared for in her daughter’s home until her last days and entered into God’s Kingdom, surrounded by family.

Edwina was born to Fitzgerald and Edith, on Feb 4 1941 in Barbados. She was the 5th of 10 children and, in her youth, she sang in the choir at Sharon Moravian church in St. Thomas, Barbados. This is where she grew in her faith and would eventually meet her future husband, Luther Smith. She and Luther married on June 3 1961 and left Barbados in 1971 with their two young daughters Monette and Jewelle to live in Montreal. Edwina worked in the hospitality industry for over 40 years before retiring to live with her daughter, Monette in Toronto in 2014, where she lived and received care until her final days.

Edwina was a loyal servant to God, first and foremost. She loved the church and loved sharing the love and warmth of our savior, Jesus Christ, with as many people as possible. Although her illness restricted her, she never lost the language skills to say grace before eating.  She enjoyed spending time with family and was known for her unwavering support, protection, nurturing ways and selfless giving to others. She was also known for her intelligence, common sense and clever, quick wit.

Edwina joins her late husband Luther in heaven, along with her older brothers, Selbert and Elroy. She is survived by her daughters Monette and Jewelle (Rohan), her grandchildren Shakira, Nathaniel, Janda (Thomas), and Kaden as well as her siblings Cynthia, Felton (Heather), Seymour, Aileen, Sybil, Carol (Rudolph), and Frank (Angela). Also, many nieces and nephews in Barbados and Montreal. Our hearts will be forever and always broken without your beautiful singing, your hearty laugh and love of family. In your life with dementia, you never forgot our names. As we now live without you, we will never forget yours.
