Obituary of Edmona DeSilvia Pinder

Obituary of Edmona Pinder

At the age of 88, Edmona DeSilvia Pinder nee Foster passed away peacefully on January 30, 2025 at Extendicare Mississauga.

She is predeceased by Hilda and Esmond Foster (parents), siblings Marjorie, Anita, Lou and Devere as well as her husband Oswald. Edmona is survived by her step-son Stephen (Eleanor) and daughters Debbie (Richmond), Heather (Dan), Tracey, Gail (Franklin) and Adelaide. Her siblings are St. Elmo (Mike) Emenel, Joan, Leroy, Vivian, Angela, Llewellyn, Arlene, Junior and Avril.  Grandchildren, Darue, Nathaniel, Steven, Christian, Kya, Jahmal, Shane, Renée, Xaria, Leila and Shakir.  Great grandchildren, Elijah, Noah, Jetaya, Jeniyah, Leilah, Sarai, Shiloh & Zavier. Great great grandmother to Zahriyah.  In addition to numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Born May 5, 1936, Edmona grew up in Trio Path, St. Andrew, Barbados, minding the family shop and active in the church before emigrating to England at the age of 19. After living and working in Leeds for over a year Edmona decided she wanted more for her life and moved to London where she met and fell in love with our dad Oswald Pinder. A true romance and a courtship that mostly took place through letters.  The untimely death of Edmona’s mother meant that she had to return to Barbados to help settle things at home; it was then that it was decided that she would return to England with her youngest sister Joan. In one of his letters Oswald proposed and agreed that they would raise Joan together. This began mom’s long career of caring for and raising children.

After having 3 children (Debbie, Heather, baby Tracey) Edmona and Oswald emigrated to Canada where they would add to their family (Gail). After 6 years in Toronto, Edmona and Oswald moved to Mississauga, the same year it was incorporated into a city and became founding members of Mississauga City Baptist Church. Shortly thereafter the family grew again with surprise baby Adelaide.

While raising her children, Edmona also took in many children, providing childcare to many families over the years. Even when working outside the home, Edmona was cherished by the many students she fed over the years while working in the cafeteria at Woodlands Secondary School in Mississauga. Many years after graduating students would squeal with delight or give a big squeeze upon seeing “Mrs. P” on the bus, in the mall or just out and about.

Edmona loved to knit and sew and made many of her own and her children’s clothes when they were small. She ensured the extended family remained close and loved a party, family gathering and the annual family picnic.  Her Souse and Yorkshire pudding were legendary.

Feisty, stubborn, joyful, playful, a very caring soul who loved to laugh, she will be deeply missed by all those who knew her. You knew you were especially close to her if she allowed you to call her Eddie.

A special thank you to the wonderful staff at Extendicare Mississauga who have taken care of our mother for the past 8 years most notably, Imelda, Yvonna, Christiann, Kamika, Tracey, Nona, Florette, Yerdonna and Ruby.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Diabetic Association of Canada.
