“Trust is the Lord with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Clyde Henderson Clarke was a magnificent embodiment of Proverbs 3:5-6. Born on November 12th, 1936 in St. Michael, Barbados to Mary Olive Doyle and Cecil Henderson Clarke, K.C., both predeceased. Clyde Henderson Clarke was the first of their four children, his birth was soon followed by George Woodbine Henderson Clarke, the only girl Maude Henderson Clarke (Winter), and Hugh Henderson Clarke, now predeceased. They also had three half siblings on their father’s side all predeceased: Lionel, Daphne Henderson Clarke (Earlam) and Alfred (Freddie) Henderson Clarke. On their mother’s side they had a beloved sister born before their mother met their father named Elaine, also predeceased. Clyde loved the Lord. He found God at River Road Church in Barbados; he was ever so thankful to his mother for introducing him and all his siblings to Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Growing up in Barbados,
Clyde swam like a fish in the ocean, enjoyed hitting 6’s at cricket, played tennis, and developed a love for music and the theatre. Clyde was a family man at heart. When Clyde was just a teen he had a child named Ricardo (Clydie) predeceased; throughout his life Clyde always did his best to care for Clydie, despite the fact that he had him so young. To help out at home, as a young man Clyde worked at Collins Pharmacy while undergoing his first level of training to become a nurse at The Psychiatric Hospital. Clyde was an intelligent man, who excelled in his studies at St Stephens Elementary Boys School and at Combermere School. That’s where he met the love of his life Carmen Roach, they worked together training as nurses. Eventually, Clyde decided to immigrate to England to further his studies in nursing in England, Carmen went with him.
Clyde always made sure to take care of his parents and his siblings even when he left Barbados for England to continue his training in nursing at the Netherne Hospital where he became a Psychiatric Nurse. Clyde and Carmen married in England and soon after had their first son, Cecil Henderson Clarke. In the late 60s Clyde moved his young family from England to Canada; soon after that they welcomed their second child, a daughter, Nadia Marquita Henderson Clarke (Pereira). In Canada Clyde continued working as a psychiatric nurse at Queen Street Mental Hospital until he retired. In Canada, Clyde became known for bringing family members from Barbados to Canada, providing shelter until they established themselves. In addition, he was always willing to offer a helping hand, provide sound advice, help out financially, or open his home as a place of refuge; never expecting anything in return. Clyde had a strong voice, was passionate, insightful, and well versed on many topics from politics, current events, to religion. Consequentially, it was this depth of his knowledge, insight and passion that enabled him to be such a strong ally and support system to so many.
Clyde’s home was often filled with music, laughter, great food and fun; especially around the holidays. Clyde loved to entertain in his younger years he often was the DJ of epic house parties, where he played an amazing selection of Disco, Calypso, Soca, Reggae and West Indian Style Waltz’s. He wasn’t just a great DJ, he was an amazing dancer too. Clyde danced some of the most beautiful waltz’s with his wife Carmen, dances she will always cherish deeply. After Clyde retired he spent much of his time reading the bible, gardening, phoning friends and family; and especially, doing what ever he could to help with his children Cecil and Nadia, his son-in-law Sherman, and his three beloved grandchildren Darius, Tiana and Juliana. Above all, Clyde mostly enjoyed and cherished spending time with his wife Carmen watching their favourite programs.
On the 23rd of March 2026,Clyde Henderson Clarke passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Thus, we are so thankful that his sister Maude, her son and daughter-in-law John and Susan Weekes were by his side when he went home to our Heavenly Father. As a man who had given his life to the Lord we can all take comfort in one thing that Clyde Henderson Clarke knew in his soul: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of he Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6
