Born in St. Catherine, Jamaica, to Uzziel Edwards and Olga Clarke on January 22, 1946, Prudence Howard—affectionately known as “P” by her husband—went home to be with her Saviour on March 23, 2026.
Those who knew Prudence knew her name fit her well: prudent, cautious ….and, strict. She led with a strong spirit yet soft heart. Like the time she boldly “licked down the duppy” approaching her in the road, only to realize the “duppy” was her neighbour on a peaceful stroll. In true P fashion, she went from fearless warrior to gentle caretaker—offering water to soothe her neighbour’s sores, and helping with her chores.
Prudence came to Canada in the 1960s and quickly made her mark, beginning with babysitting for the Kafetz family, before working in the automotive industry. She often returned to Jamaica, where she met Neville George Howard, and gladly accepted Brother Miguel’s vision that they were to wed. In 1988, they married in Jamaica and built a life together in Canada, rooted in faith and love.
With all the hats she wore, she was also a devoted pastor at Mount Refuge Church of the First Born in Canada, serving faithfully alongside her husband and speaking the Word of God with conviction. Prudence was a wife, sister, cousin, aunt, friend, mother to many—and a great cook. Boy, could she cook. Many still talk about her infamous Jamaican mix up mix up soup … cow foot, chicken foot, pigs tail, suh sweet!
Even in her final days, she never gave up hope. She passed away surrounded by her husband and loved ones.
She is survived by her husband, sisters, brothers, cousins, nieces, and nephews, and will be dearly missed by her family, church community, coworkers, and all who knew and loved her.
Rest in eternal peace, “P.” Heaven just got a little more joyful—and a lot better fed.
